Tutorial with Kathleen

A few ideas were thrown around in our last tutorial with Kathleen. The following notes were made:
  • Since the scriptwriter is male, caution should be taken so that the mother should definitely a real person.
  • We really need the details of the mother and daughter. Is there a father involved? Where will the empathy lie? Should the mother be a midwife, the irony of dealing with life and death. The symbolism of the midwife is quite deep – quite lower-middle class. It’s also very dutiful and not well paid. Filipino? (Daughter at 23, but make her 41).
  • Is there a father? Skype? If it’s contemporary? Letters of thanks and cards?
  • Her death should give the most out of the story. How will the mother navigate her grief?
  • Solution?? Resolution? Spiritual and transcendual? Life cycle? Isabel Allende’s “House of the Spirits.” – It’s not that the mother is coming to terms with it, but it’s her coping mechanism (trying to bring her back). She’s in denial. Death is a connection between people, there’s already a sense of fate since you can’t choose fate.
  • Spirit of the daughter? Spiritual or magical realm? Use match cut to bring the two together, in the resolution.
  • Atilla – Lease: the breakup of the relationship. At the end the woman is sitting in her place, she sees a spirit coming through the door.
  • Definition of a greek tragedy – it’s a catharsis. These stories reach into the depth of the human heart and suffering. The way in which a young person dies would be important.
